And you know what? The process is a beautiful sight to see! The locks empty and fill with water at around 1 foot of water per minute. It takes about 8 minutes to empty or fill the chamber at the Dubuque Lock and Dam 11. But the largest chamber is 26 feet in diameter and would take much longer to pass through!
