Puerto Rico is one of the dreamiest places in the Caribbean, though it’s often forgotten by travelers looking for that all-inclusive resort feel of a place like St. Thomas or Barbados. All the same, leisure travelers flock to PR as one of their island destinations of choice. Why? Because PR’s picturesque ocean views, stunning El Yunque Rainforest, and bioluminescent bay views in Vieques never get old.

From the Atlantic Ocean to the Caribbean Sea, PR has far more to offer than just the sights of San Juan or the countless rum samplings. While bad weather canceled my bioluminescent bay adventures, PR immediately became a place I longed to return to. And it wasn’t just the mofongo (fried plantain mash, crunchy pork skin, and garlic) that keeps me dreaming of this shimmering isle.

What you won’t find on this list are all-inclusive resorts. They simply aren’t needed since PR is so accessible and budget-friendly. To fully experience the island you need to get out of your resort. After all, can’t see Old San Juan unless you leave your hotel!

When you’re surrounded by palm trees you too can’t help but sway, which is why the island is perfect for relaxing. Whether for you that means a fine dining restaurant, lounging on a private beach, spending the day on a golf course, or a swim-up bar, you can’t go wrong.

If you’re concerned about language barriers, consider staying in San Juan. Although PR is a U.S. territory, only about 20% of Puerto Ricans are fluent in English. You’re more likely to encounter language barriers outside of the capital city or other large metropolitan areas like Ponce. It’s a great place to practice your Spanish skills though!

Four swimming pools with a relaxed pool area will maintain your chill vacation vibes. And the onsite spa and salon will keep you looking and feeling your best long before your trip is over. If you’re hunting for more action the beach has it all from snorkeling to jet skiing tours.

The Fairmont is also home to four on-site restaurants. These include Cana for Catalan/Spanish cuisine, Bar Americana, and Il Sole or Riva for Italian specialties. When you need to relax somewhere like PR that doesn’t have all-inclusive, this is as close as you’re bound to get.

4. Sheraton Puerto Rico Hotel & Casino

Not only can you walk to so many places from Sheraton Puerto Rico Hotel & Casino, but this spot also has so much to do. Hop aboard a free beach shuttle to Condado Beach or take a leisurely 20-minute stroll down to the beach.

Not to mention this casino resort also has incredible views of the city from its outdoor pool. I couldn’t get enough of them when I stayed here — especially at sunset.

Some rooms have private balconies from which you can observe the greenery, the city, or perhaps even the not-so-distant ocean. You’ll be grateful for the 24-hour room service after a long day of exploring.

And don’t let the five hotel restaurants get away from you either. Metropol Restaurant’s bolitas de queso (fried cheese balls) and margaritas are beyond yummy.

• Shuttle times are not consistent (one even drove away even as we approached it to board – seems like some of the drivers are inconsistent too!)

5. La Concha Renaissance San Juan Resort

A pearl alongside Condado Beach, this conch-themed resort is a unique place to call home in PR. La Concha Renaissance San Juan Resort is unlike any other beach resort on the island without a price that’ll break the bank.

Full disclosure, La Concha Resort was supposed to be where I spent my honeymoon. Unfortunately, Hurricane Maria had other plans.

Luckily this hotel came back to host guests once again. Only a few miles from famous San Juan locations and historical landmarks and within walking distance of parks, shops, and restaurants, this is an incredible accommodation choice.

La Concha Resort with its moderate prices, restaurants, spa offerings, and swimming pool is absolutely the best all-around accommodation in PR. Who couldn’t find paradise on a private balcony facing the ocean which is a stone’s throw away?

6. Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve Puerto Rico

Off of secluded Coco Beach, the Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve Puerto Rico provides all the comfort you need for time away. From the relaxing lagoon-style pool set in the midst of the resort’s gardens to its signature golf courses, there is so much to do.

Should you decide to take advantage of the on-site spa with kids in tow, there’s room for them there too. The spa area has a kid’s pool in addition to its salon and spa services, yoga or fitness classes, and a jacuzzi. There’s no reason the kids can’t have a spa experience too, after all.

Enjoy watersports, live music, and five restaurants without even having to leave the resort property. That’s for the best since there isn’t anything walkable from the hotel property. You can easily get to places like El Yunque Rainforest or Seven Seas National Park.

7. Condado Vanderbilt Hotel

Only a mile from the Museum of Art of Puerto Rico and steps from La Ventana al Mar Park, the Condado Vanderbilt Hotel is a stunner — especially for couples. The Condado Vanderbilt Hotel offers horseback riding, bike tours, water sports, live music, and even cooking classes.

Few hotels offer as many activities as the Condado Vanderbilt. Don’t let that stop you from getting off the property to see the island, though! Live music abounds on the island, so you’re sure to hear it anywhere you go — especially at night.

The pool bar will make sure your time in the swimming pool is a relaxed one, though if you need more pampering you’re welcome to check out the spa. And when 5 o’clock hits (or not — it’s 5 o’clock somewhere, right?) it’s time for a stop at Tacos & Tequila!

Condado Beach is only a few hundred feet away from the Condado Vanderbilt Hotel, as are several off-site restaurants and parks as well. You simply cannot beat the view of the bay from this hotel’s private balconies.

• Right off the beach

• Several restaurants
• Lots of activities available including horseback riding

8. Copamarina Beach Resort and Spa

A lush, green beach resort on the Caribbean Sea side of the island, the Copamarina Beach Resort and Spa is far and away from the other resorts in PR we’ve listed so far. It is a way to get in touch with nature while still having access to the luscious amenities you’d want on vacation.

Playa Caña Gorda is the only major, walkable location from Copamarina Beach Resort. While that might be a problem for some travelers, the slight seclusion of this beach resort is part of its charm. Why not rent a bicycle and explore the nearby beach (or even go on a beach hopping tour) or go snorkeling to glimpse at the local sealife?

Two swimming pools, a spa area, and two restaurants are available to you when you get back to Copamarina Beach Resort. When you’re ready to try mofongo with grouper instead of pork (still completely delicious), head over to Las Palmas Café.

• Not in walking distance to off-site properties except beach

9. Dorado Beach, a Ritz Carlton Reserve

A luxurious property like you’d expect from the brand, the Dorado Beach, a Ritz Carlton Reserve is absolutely gorgeous. Multiple outdoor pools, four restaurants, in-room dining, and many opulent amenities you’ll fall in love with. There are a few beaches within walking distance from the Dorado Beach resort, just over half a mile away.

The whole family can love a getaway at Dorado Beach in all its serene luxury. I’d recommend a room with a private plunge pool to avoid even having to leave your room for some time in the refreshing water!

The spa at Dorado Beach offers a range of relaxing amenities including couples massages. Don’t forget to add some fine dining to your romantic trip to Dorado Beach, a Ritz Carlton Reserve if you’re headed there with your special someone.

10. San Juan Water & Beach Club Hotel

Snorkeling, sunbathing, swimming, surfing, and jet skiing adventures await you at Isla Verde Beach, right next door to the San Juan Water & Beach Club Hotel. If getting sand between your toes ain’t your jam, you can enjoy the water even from afar in the rooftop pool at San Juan WBC. You’re also only a few minutes drive from the airport so you can get to relaxing even faster!

San Juan WBC only has one restaurant on-site, Kumo Rooftop, which serves Japanese cuisine. Luckily you only have to walk a few hundred feet to find more dining options. You’re also within walking distance from both the Isla Verde Reef Marine Reserve and Pine Grove Beach.

This may be a boutique hotel, but it doesn’t look like it. Especially when you consider that every room in San Juan WBC has floor-to-ceiling windows for lovely city or ocean views. San Juan WBC is also a more moderately priced resort on the beach which makes it a great option for budget travelers too.

• Close to the airport
• Moderate prices
• Cozy, boutique hotel

11. Hilton Ponce Golf and Casino Resort

For travelers headed to PR’s second-largest city, Ponce, the Hilton Ponce Golf and Casino Resort might be just what you’re looking for. Serving food in three restaurants, a variety of outdoor activities, and spa services, the Hilton Ponce Golf Resort gives Hilton hotels an island life treatment.

The two on-site outdoor swimming pools each have a little something different. Children will love the waterslide at one while the adults might prefer the views from the other. Either way, you’ll be basking in the island sun.

You can’t really walk anywhere from this beach resort, though they offer plenty to keep you occupied. They even have live performances, walking tours, classes to teach you about the local Puerto Rican culture, and even tours covering the island’s coffee industry.

I loved my time in Ponce. It’s a much more relaxed environment than the big city of San Juan.

Plus the walking tours with Isla Caribe cannot be beaten. You’ll learn so much from this female-owned tour company and learn so much more about the city than you might otherwise.

12. Condado Ocean Club

From the seaside pool, facing Condado Beach, you’ll think you’re in heaven at Condado Ocean Club. A relaxing atmosphere just a short walk from places like Fort San Cristobal, Plaza de Armas, San Jerónimo del Boquerón Fort (the Fortress of San Jerónimo del Boquerón), or the contemporary art museum, the Ocean Club is one of the best resorts in Puerto Rico for anyone looking for attractions within easy walking distance.

Prime shore access is easily one of the top reasons to stay at this beach resort, though its proximity to eateries and shops in San Juan is a close second. If you’re going to stay in the capital city, why not get a little of the city and the sea in one easy location?

This is one of the only adults-only resorts in Puerto Rico, particularly in this round-up. Here’s one way to take in the ocean views, have a romantic dinner, and enjoy some pool time without kiddos running around.

Designed in a Caribbean style, the Villa Montaña Beach Resort is more secluded than many of the other beach resorts. Complete with two on-site pool areas, garden view rooms, and plenty of acreages, there is so much to enjoy at Villa Montaña.

The Eclipse restaurant may be the only dining option, but it offers several cuisine options including pizza, seafood, as well as local and even international choices. If you need something else though you can walk over to Dr. Bizarro or the Aguadilla Foodtruck Park.

Other attractions aren’t within walking distance, though Isabella is known for having some of the most stunning views on the island. Consider renting a bike from Villa Montaña just to get a look at the majestic nature around you.

14. El Conquistador Resort

The San Juan airport is only a few minutes away, as are the palm trees lining Carolina Beach, several restaurants, and the Plaza Las Americas as well as Old San Juan. Many water sports are also offered through the hotel including windsurfing and snorkeling. So feel free to enjoy the surrounding area to your heart’s content!

Parents will also be glad to know that there is a children’s club at the hotel as well to keep the little ones occupied. A perfect excuse to sneak away to the spa or indulge in some pilates classes. When staying somewhere as indulgent as the Ritz Carlton San Juan, feel free to fully immerse yourself in luxuriating.
