How Did the Rocks Form?
The flaming rocks are located on Mount Chimaera, an inactive volcano. The mountain contains tiny fumaroles, or vents, that release gas and steam. The gas is constantly pushed through these vents due to gas pressure build-up.
These gases ignite when they come into contact with the oxygen in the air, creating the flaming effect. They’re a natural torch of sorts, fueled by gas emissions that arise through the voids in the rocks on the mountain.
The gas emissions consisting of methane are locally known as ‘yanartas’ in Turkish. Methane is a lighter-than-air gas that’s usually created as organic matter degrades.
But scientists believe this is abiogenic methane gas, a rare form of methane from other natural processes. The vents represent the biggest emission of abiogenic methane discovered on land so far. Hydrogen has also been detected rising from the vents at the rocks.
For years, sailors would use the flames as a natural lighthouse as they sailed the nearby waters. Today, hikers go to the flaming rocks to brew tea and cook food.
The fires burn constantly and are larger during the colder winter because of more gas flux. This is attributed to atmospheric and ground pressure changes, which are impacted by groundwater and other factors.
The Myth Behind the Rocks
There is a myth surrounding these fire rocks in Turkey. It’s said that they are the result of a mythical beast that breathes fire called a Chimaera. A Chimaera is said to have a lion’s head, with a goat’s head on its back and a tail that ends with a snake’s head.
There was also a place called Mount Chimaera in the ancient Lycian city of Phaselis. Some have called the modern Mount Chimaera. The fires burn constantly day after day, month after month, year after year. The fire vents are surrounded by ash and rock.
The vegetation was burned away long ago, so the fire does not spread to the surrounding forest. If you’re willing to camp in the region, visitors will be rewarded with an incredible nightly sight as the flames light the darkness.
